My wife called on her way home tonight and said "go look at Pilchuck!!" So I ran upstairs to my office window and saw why she was so excited. The light was just hitting the top of Mt. Pilchuck making it jump out from the deep blue sky surrounding it.

We are so lucky to live in this beautiful area.

The "official" start of the season

This weekend is the big Seattle Wedding Show at the Washington State Convention Center. While I don't care to have a booth there, it is a wonderful opportunity for me to cruise the room and catchup with my favorite colleagues and meet potential clients.

Seattle Bride Magazine and I have had a long-standing relationship and this year they have started something new in their annual "Bride Guide" -- an online link.

As I tell my potential clients, hiring the right photographer is VERY important. Experience and personal style make a huge difference between just taking pictures and really capturing the visual story of your important day. As the wedding season slows down this time of year I have more time to "play" outdoors. Actually, I'm supposed to be working in the yard, but I always have a little pocket camera with me.

10 years later

I had a pleasant surprise yesterday when I received an email from a bride whose wedding I photographed 10 years ago. She and her husband now live and work in Africa and she was looking for permission to use an image from their wedding on her blog to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary.

I love hearing from previous clients. When I photograph someone's wedding I am sharing in one of the most emotional and important days in their life. And while I maintain my "professional" appearance on the outside, I am a hopeless romantic on the inside and always walk away feeling like I've made new friends. When I hear from a former client it brings back all those feelings for me.

In this particular case, their wedding produced one of my favorite images that I have used in my portfolio presentation ever since.

The unexpected

I have two friends who are both photographers. One is a professional and the other one is a very good enthusiast with a nice eye for composition. My friend who is the professional ALWAYS has a camera with him. My other friend only carries one occasionally.

This week as I was driving home from Redmond I came upon this scene. Obviously I'm in the camp of ALWAYS keeping a camera with me because you never know when life is going to surprise you with a visual opportunity.

Years ago when I was a newspaper photographer, I pulled up to a traffic light and saw this poignant moment happening across the street. In those days I not only carried a camera with me all the time, I kept one on the front seat of the car within quick reach.

As I've gotten older, this picture has only grown stronger for me. The contrast between the couple in love and the forlorn looking woman speaks to me of the frailty of emotions that exists for many people. That is the power of photography. It can capture the tranquil beauty of a scene or reveal our deepest feelings.

This is also the mission of my wedding photography: to preserve those feelings and emotions that will become more important to each of us as the years pass.

In memory of Ed

My wife's father, Ed, requested his ashes be cast into the ocean at Cannon Beach, Oregon, after a touching memorial service at Lake View Cemetery in Seattle.

That evening after all the other family members had departed, Sally and I watched the sunset on the Pacific and Ed's final resting place.

It was a fitting tribute for a much loved father to whom I will always be grateful for bringing my beautiful wife and soulmate into this world.

Rest in peace, Ed. You are missed by many.

A number considered to be good luck by some and just good planning by others. Whatever it means it was the perfect date for Katherine and John to be married on the beautiful grounds of Kiana Lodge.

Each year Seattle Bride Magazine asks its readers to vote for their favorite wedding vendor in many different categories, such as best reception site, best florist, best officiant, etc. I am very proud to announce that I was chosen as the Best Wedding Photographer of 2009.

Saturday I photographed the wedding of Heidi Brandvoid and Michael Wallace at the Orcas Hotel on beautiful Orcas Island. What an amazing and romantic location for a wedding! The Orcas Hotel sits up on a hill overlooking the ferry terminal and the beautiful blue water of Puget Sound.

The weather couldn’t have been nicer with warm temperatures and a gentle breeze. The wedding was small and intimate and it was apparent that everyone in attendance was truly special to Heidi and Michael.

Doug Tidwell, who owns and operates the hotel, has often spoken to me about “Island Time”, which simply put means slowing down, leaving stress behind and thoroughly enjoying the moment.

What a wonderful way to start a marriage.

The Children's Miracle Network

Children’s Miracle Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children’s hospitals. The 170 Children’s Miracle Network hospitals serve children in their communities through state-of-the-art medical care, life-saving research and preventative education. These nonprofit hospitals help millions of children overcome diseases and injuries of every kind by providing the highly specialized care children need. Children’s Miracle Network hospitals are also on the front lines of preventing disease and injury through research, education and outreach programs that keep millions of children out of the hospital each year.

The photo department at my local Costco (in Everett) asked me and other pros to donate some nature images which they printed and turned into greeting cards. They are selling the cards for a suggested donation of $1 per card with all proceeds going to The Children’s Miracle Network. I’m happy to report the cards are selling briskly. Meredith & Matthew

I love shooting engagement sessions of my future brides and grooms. It gives us all a chance to get comfortable with each other before the wedding.
